This Woman Is The Most Famous WW2 Codebreaker You’ve Never Heard Of

American code-breaker, Elizabeth Friedman, is not a household name in Britain ( or the US). So, in this week’s Book Talk, I interview author Jason Fagone about his new book, The Woman Who Smashed Codes.   This exciting work hopes to rescue from oblivion the life and work of this great American codebreaker.

Friedman worked on the Enigma codes, which were made famous in the movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch. She also helped put gangsters behind bars and smashed Nazi spy rings in South America. Yet the world forgot her and her work remained classified for decades, while others took credit for her achievements. This fascinating book looks to set the record straight.
