Spring Awakening

I know I’m jumping the gun but I couldn’t help feeling today that this wretched winter is almost over. Here on Long Island there is tons of snow still – but brilliant sunshine. We lay on the beach in our winter coats dozing like seals. It’s been a brute of a January: like Baffin Island, which I visited many years ago. I have felt like an Inuit. The driveway frozen, snow compacted to three inch thick ice as hard as rock; grey skies. Cabin fever weather. Tonight I fly to England for a month. When I come back, I hope that the cardinals will already be nesting in the garden.
