Remembering Hurricane Katrina

Today is the tenth anniversary of Katrina, so I would like to share this story, Escape From New Orleans, which I wrote for the London Times. A friend of ours in the music business called me and said that a New Orleans singer called Charmaine Neville had an amazing story to tell, which the US media was ignoring, would I be interested? I called her and the moment I put down the phone was organising my trip. I arrived a few days after the hurricane to scenes of utter devastation. I was the first journalist to enter the Lower Ninth Ward, thanks to Charmaine’s popularity and access. I ended up staying three days, reliving the hurricane through Charmaine’s eyes. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my career, and remains etched in my memory as though it was yesterday.
