Cybergate: The Back Story (4)


Like most people outside the Beltway, I had never heard of Michael Connell. But I quickly discovered that his name was all over the web long before his plane crashed. On one site, he was openly referred to as Karl Rove’s ‘vote rigger’, who had created secret IT systems to steal elections, notably in Ohio, in 2004. There were YouTube videos of cyber experts talking about mirror sites, Man In the Middle Attacks and the furtive rerouting of IP addresses from Ohio to a secret computer server in Chattanooga, Tennessee in the middle of election night in 2004. There were rumours of a vast, right wing conspiracy to steal elections by manipulating the software code in electronic voting machines. There was a cast of bizarre characters – like the two Urosevich brothers, Ukrainian-American immigrants and fanatical Right to Lifers, whose company, Digital Election Solutions, was one of the first and largest manufacturers of electronic voting machines. According to one website, it was all about saving the babies. I felt like I had gone down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland ….. ( to be continued)
