Hubris At Seaworld
Hopefully, the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau, the trainer who was killed by an Orca at Seaworld in Orlando yesterday, will impel the owners/shareholders of Seaworld to end these shows. Orcas are wild creatures that belong in the ocean. Turning them into performers for profit in so-called amusement parks to be gawked at by popcorn-munching crowds degrades and banalises both them – and the people... read more

Roger Ebert’s Lament For a Piece of Lost London
I loved this beautifully written piece by Roger Ebert, the film critic, mourning the loss of a bit of London’s eccentric history – like all the best writing, it puts you right on the spot so you can see and feel and smell the place being described. I don’t often go to Jermyn Street – it’s way out of my price league – but I occasionally window shop with an old... read more

The Falkland Islands
I’m having a fascinating discussion on Facebook about the Falkland Islands, again in the news, which has mushroomed into a general discussion about colonialism and the Third World. A passionate, Latin Marxista in London paints a black and white picture of colonialism. But new studies have shown that what we call colonialism often produced unexpected benefits. India is the best example. Here are two... read more

Cybergate: The Back Story (6)
The four hours of taped interviews I recorded with Cliff Arnebeck not only proved he was no tinfoil hatter or conspiracy theorist but that his claim that the Ohio, 04 election had been stolen by cyber fraud, though not yet proven, was founded on solid, forensic and circumstantial evidence. The next day I drove to Wooster, Ohio, to meet with one of America’s leading experts on cyber security, Stephen... read more

Cybergate @ Maxim.com
The Maxim article has just posted @ http://tinyurl.com/ydwqdhj It’s been filed in, of all places, a section called ” Stupid Fun.” Incongruous, to say the least. But at least it may get plenty of hits. At the moment it seems to be the third most popular... read more

Cybergate: The Back Story (5)
I didn’t have a dog in this fight. I come from a country (Britain) where we still vote with a stubby bit of pencil and a ballot paper. Not my country, not my problem. Besides, a new era had dawned. Obama had been elected. If these cyber geeks were so good at stealing elections, why hadn’t they fixed it so that McCain won? As I would discover later, they intended to: but had backed away at the last... read more
